Heh, after talking to a "Linux GPRS tech" (yea, I was amazed too) he told me I didn't have the laptop GPRS service. He had me connect to wap.voicestream.com instead of internet2 and the ppp connection started up just fine. The tech told me that internet3 gives you a routable IP. Much has been happening, and I?d like to catch you up. TCWUG Mission Statement The organizing committee has finalized a mission statement and come to some conclusions regarding the best next steps in formalizing the organization. Our mission statement: The Twin Cities Wireless Users Group will promote and develop open wireless internet access in public spaces. Regarding the possibility of becoming a registered non-profit and/or teaming with an existing non-profit: We?ve decided the best course of action is to not formalize the organization until we have a larger core membership and an active project/projects that require more of a structure. To that end, we are working on a project (see below) that will give us a concrete goal and an opportunity for everyone to roll up their sleeves and participate. Loring Park project: Project Goal: The Twin Cities Wireless Users Group will design, build, and maintain open wireless access in Loring Park and areas adjacent to the Park. This project is designed to closely follow the Bryant Park project (http://www.technolosophy.com/projects/bryantpark.html) coordinated by nycwireless (www.nycwireless.net). We aim to provide free public wireless access in Loring Park, a large public park in downtown Minneapolis. Access will not limited to TCWUG members, but will be open to anyone with a wireless card. Our goal is to increase internet access, and to allow citizens to utilize our great public spaces and still be connected to the internet. The project is still in the planning stages: attendees at the last meeting (4/8/03) will remember we discussed different options for getting access to the park (from a central point inside the park vs. several points outside the park pointed in) and members are in process of determining the best locations for sites in either of these scenarios. Members are also compiling a list of the needed hardware and will post the needed items to the mailing list for anyone who wants to donate their extra equipment. An opportunity to do good and clean out your closets! When the proper sites have been found and the hardware gathered, we will have an install-fest to actually put the equipment in place. Once everything is in place, we?ll call on the membership to test the systems and identify any bugs. Both of these activities will be posted to the list, and everyone?s participation will be greatly appreciated. One of the goals of this project, along with providing internet access to the people using the park, is to give the membership of TCWUG something to ?sink our teeth into? and turn our organization into something more than a discussion group. We will, of course, continue to have interesting discussions on various topics at our monthly meetings (see below). Monthly Meetings: I would like to start (re-start?) including guest speakers during the first part of each meeting. To that end, I?d like people to post topics of interest to the list, and anyone with contacts/expertise in that area can reply and/or email me directly to arrange a speaking date. My hope is that these discussions will make the meetings more interesting and informative, and will encourage a more regular attendance. Thanks for bearing with me through this long screed. Any and all comments welcome. Ben -- Ben Nelson 612.685.9116 cell benmgroup@earthlink.net -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I've decided that it's probably easiest to get a DC Injector, so I have one on order right now... To answer everyone's question, I plan to use Part 97 rules since the main purpose of this wireless link is my own use.. To kind of introduce myself to the list, I'm Brian and I'm about 50 miles south of Minneapolis in a town called Faribault. I've been a ham since I was about 12 years old, so about 13 years now. I've been working with 1200 baud packet on VHF for longer than that... I got interested in 802.11 wireless probably a year ago. Makes me wonder why more hams around the area aren't getting into this technology. Almost seems like the next logical step.. I hope to attend at least a few TCWUG meetings when I get the time. It sounds like a great group with knowledgeable people we have here. Wi-Fi access planned for Mears, Loring parks Wireless networks would allow outdoor Internet access via = laptops or handheld computers BY JULIO OJEDA-ZAPATA Pioneer Press Dense "clouds" may soon descend upon two of the Twin Cities' = best-known urban parks =97 not wispy puffs of water vapor, but rather = swarms of invisible, rapidly moving bits of digital data. And while they = won't help keep the parks green, they would be a boon for e-mail junkies = and Web surfers. "Cloud" is computer-user slang for a wireless Internet = network. If separate but similar projects unfold as planned, such = networks will soon envelop downtown St. Paul's Mears Park and downtown = Minneapolis' Loring Park. Both networks would rely on a popular kind of computer = networking known as 802.11b or Wi-Fi, already in use for wireless online = access in coffeeshops, airports, schools and offices. The networks allow anyone with a wireless-ready laptop or = handheld computer to gain high-speed Internet access at little or no = cost, a grand social experiment already attempted in other outdoor = public venues such as New York City's tony Bryant Park. Mears Park likely will be "lit up" first, to use another = wireless-networking catchphrase. By this week, a transmitter atop a = Lowertown office building could be blasting bandwidth at the park lawns, = trails, benches and bandshell just below. Online access will be free. The Loring Park network, a more ambitious undertaking, = remains in the planning stages but could be ready by summer, organizers = say. That network, much larger than the one in Mears Park, would = potentially be available to thousands of residents, students and = visitors in the much-trafficked neighborhood. While free Wi-Fi networks have proliferated in indoor = gathering spots around the Twin Cities, outdoor networks are much harder = to find. That's why Ralph Jenson of Lowertown's VoxNew tech firm = wants to light up Mears Park, which he can see through his office = window. On warm days, he wants to stroll onto the grass with his = Apple PowerBook so he can work while sunning himself. He wants to offer = that amenity to other computer users from all walks of life, no strings = attached, to make the park and neighborhood a more vibrant place. "I'm not expecting to get anything out of it," says Jenson, = whose fledgling firm specializes in Internet-based voice services. "I = just hope it attracts more people to Lowertown." To spark this influx, Jenson will use Ethernet cabling to = extend his office network on the top floor of the Railroader Printing = House building to a Wi-Fi device stashed in a nearby elevator shaft. = That device will be connected to a transmitter near VoxNew's rooftop = deck. Once pointed at the park, the transmitter will provide = nearly complete Wi-Fi coverage. Jenson hopes to obliterate scattered = "dead spots" later, with the city of St. Paul's blessing, by installing = a network-extension device on the park grounds. In Minneapolis, Leif Utne of the nationally renowned Utne = magazine is spearheading a community campaign to light up Loring Park = for reasons not unlike Jenson's. Utne, the magazine's online managing editor whose offices = overlook the park, envisions cash-strapped students from the nearby = Minneapolis Community and Technical College availing themselves of free = or low-cost bandwidth. He wants to attract others in the Twin Cities who = crave online access but can't pay stiff monthly fees. "The location of Loring Park is very interesting in that at = one end you have the Walker Art Center and at the other, you have MCTC," = says Alex Huff, head of the Minneapolis-based Blue Turtle = tech-consulting firm and creator of TCwireless.net, a Twin Cities Wi-Fi = online directory. "Bridging (these locations) would create an amazing new = medium for artists to extend art through the use of technology," says = Huff, who is helping Utne push for the Loring Park network. "Students = would be able to use the park for group meetings, studying and social = purposes." While Utne and Huff aren't promising the network will be = erected, they say they've encountered great community enthusiasm for the = project and, so far, no insurmountable obstacles. "Theoretically this could happen next week," Utne says. "But = we need to get some funding in place." -- --*--SpencerUnderground--*-- http://autonomous.tv/ spencer@autonomous.tv Key fingerprint = 173B 8760 E59F DBF8 6FD2 68F8 ABA2 AB08 49C7 4754 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... For a month I had had the $10/month for 2MB of data which I was able to gather was the "only way" you could get online with T-Mobile (at least what I could tell from talking to T-Mobile and their site). WAY too much for too little. I shut that off a while ago and after watching this thread I went back out to T-Mobile's site and signed up for the $3/1MB deal (free first month) to see if I could get online. What do you know! Works just like before except I'm not paying out the ass. Only difference, before I connected to internet2.voicestream.com instead of the wap.voicestream.com. In any case, T-Mobile either doesn't realize this or they enjoy reaping money from people how don't care to investigate a little. Thought I'd throw in my two cents. tim On Monday, April 14, 2003, at 02:07 PM, Scott Dier - dieman wrote: > On Mon, 14 Apr 2003, Nate Carlson wrote: > >>> I called last week and verified that I have the $2.99/meg addon. Yeah, the T300's are supposed to be fairly decent cameras. So is the image quality off them any better than the 'generic' digital camera pictures? Also, does the T300 have infrared or bluetooth? T-Mobile doesn't mention either, but they also conveniently forgot to mention that the T68[m|i] had Bluetooth on their features page, so I don't believe them anymore.. :) If not, you'll have to pick up a data cable for the phone if you want to try using it with a laptop.. it *may* not support it, but that'd kind of surprise me. > I'm just amazed at how much phones have advanced in the past year and > how much $99 buys you. Once my T68m dies (it will; cell phones have an average life of 9 months for me.. carrying it around in a pocket getting banged against everything isn't good for it.. good thing I almost always manage to break it within the warranty period, without any obvious physical harm coming to it!), I think I'm going to have to convince T-Mobile to upgrade me to a Nokia 3650.. it's ugly and all, but it's the only phone they offer with Bluetooth now, as far as I can tell. :( -- Nate Carlson | Phone : (952)943-8700 http://www.real-time.com | Fax : (952)943-8500 _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list From tcwug-list-admin at archives.real-time.com Mon Apr 14 15:23:39 2003 From: tcwug-list-admin at archives.real-time.com (tcwug-list-admin@archives.real-time.com) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:33:20 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] Breaking WEP keys... The addon camera for the T300 is minimal quality at best. I'm assuming that the smaller the image, the easier it is for the limited CPU in the phone to process it and send/receive it. Basically, it's good enough to get a grainy likeness of your subject. The image works well for a 1.5" color LCD screen. ;-) > Also, does the T300 have infrared or bluetooth? Infrared. I ditto Ben here, certainly need to look into the legalities of this deal. If it's something commercially available, be sure to read the directions and use equipment type certified with the amplifier. (No manufacturer A's card to Manufacturer B's amplifier to Manufacturer C's antenna stuff, unless the documentation says that's an acceptable configuration.) Follow the documentation. It already sounds like you are trying to homebrew parts of the project; be careful. The power is likely not a large consideration, but anything that may change the RF output is. A homebrew power supply may work great, it also may case the RF to output past the legal limit. Legalities aside, you need to provide us more specifics on what model, manufacturer, etc. if you are looking for actual advice here. What you have told us is the equivalent of "I drive a vehicle. It's a truck. The electrical line to the gas pump keeps cutting in and out when I push the accelerator. Where is the wire I look to fix?" Not knowing the specifics, none of us are any help here. If we knew that it was a late 80's Ford Ranger pickup, like the one I own, we could tell you that this is a common problem, and the cable is located on the driver's side, bottom side of the engine and provides current to the gas pump as you accelerate. The insulation used on the wire sometimes wears off through the years due to the salt from Minnesota roads. Eventally it corrodes the insulation, and causes an intermittant connection and failure to accelerate. So the truck stalls, and eventaully quits working until you replace the wire and insulation. *sigh* that was last week. 1988 was quite a year for Ford Pickup technology. But, I digress... Disassemble it and look for an RF Choke (inductor) connected to the "to radio" jack. There will also be capacitor that feeds the RF through to the amp itself. Depending on the construction, you may be able to lift one end of the choke and inject 12V there. I'd recommend using a feed through capacitor to get the 12V supply inside the case. I'd be happy to wield the screwdriver & soldering iron if you'd like, I'm guessing it'd take 30 mins at most. I assume you know this will void FCC type approval etc etc etc and you know about power limits etc etc. Crack the case open and post some photos. -- andyw@pobox.com Andy Warner Voice: (612) 801-8549 Fax: (208) 575-5634 _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list From tcwug-list-admin at archives.real-time.com Mon Apr 14 13:09:47 2003 From: tcwug-list-admin at archives.real-time.com (tcwug-list-admin@archives.real-time.com) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:33:25 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] T-mobile GPRS In-Reply-To: References: <20030411020437.GB21213@fandre.com> Message-ID: <20030414180946.GA24134@fandre.com> On Mon, 14 Apr 2003, Nate Carlson wrote: > On Thu, 10 Apr 2003, Clay Fandre wrote: > > I have a Motorola P280. Then turn the antenna backwards and start working the null back to the source. When you can't null out the noise any longer no matter which way you turn the antenna, you will be on top of the source. Supposedly, when you use their "Air Plus" products together (which both of the above are), you can get up to 22 Mbps throughput. I haven't seen quite that speed, but it *does* appear that there is slightly better performance than straight 802.11b. Once they get something working, it can work well, though not always performing as well as some (not all) higher priced gear. What you will often get burned by with these manufacturers is that they have a popular product; which they then cost-reduce. This can sometimes be a completely different set of innards, with a totally different performance envelope. Message-ID: <20021016173833.GA95305@botwerks.org> matt, et al - i think that a course of reasonableness can be struck here that provides benefits for both the gopher amateur radio club (GARC) and TCWUG. if the goals and the capabilities of the GARC are such that they can place a node on the top of moos tower and interconnect it with other nodes in the twin cities then these are good things. more power to them. if an arrangement of traffic sharing can be established between the groups and traffic routed between the two networks this is a good thing as well. these are not necessarily mutually exclusive goals. it strikes me that it is up to the TCWUG to develop nodes and deploy them within the twin cities and where applicable partner with other groups to achieve common goals. as i understood it the last time we all (TCWUG) discussed what the group goals were they broke down in to a couple of lines of interest. - folks interested in building an overlay for the purpose of moving IP traffic around the twin cities w/o the need for external infrastructure (read: wireline) - folks interested in coordinated hot spot deployments. common authentications scheme, shared utilization, etc. - folks just interested in learning about the technology and hanging out. it strikes me that instead of "arguing" (i use the term loosely) about TCWUG access it might be a good thing for the TCWUG group to work to create something which would be of value and worthy of peering with. let's not look a gift horse in the mouth in terms of the moos oppty. but take it as an opportunity to extend and build something of value. this seems to be a good topic for discussion saturday. when last we saw our hero (Tuesday, Oct 15, 2002), mgenelin@ieee.umn.edu was madly tapping out: > Hey Chuck (and gang)-- > > It's obvious to me that a number of months ago when Ben and I > pitched this project to the TC-WUG group, noone ever explained the > underlaying ideas on the mailing list. The Moos Tower Project appears to be following a centralized base station concept: low power mobiles uplinking to a centralized, higher elevation receiver, which answers by downlinking to the same mobile by a centralized, higher elevation transmitter. There obviously are more legal and engineering issues than first thought. I propose an alternative: using whatever bandwidth is available to individual members, whether it be xDSL, ISDN, or dial-up modems, we can link hotspots together. Depending on the topology of the network, sites may be major nodes with routing capabilities, minor nodes with hubs or switches, or leaf nodes at end points of the physical cloud. Secure, encrypted transmission protocols would be an eventual necessity. All traffic adhere to contractual agreements with upstream providers. Between private parties, i.e. node to node wireline links, there would be no such limitations. I can elaborate on this idea at the next formal meeting if you want me to.
