(ASCEND) Outbound async PPP

To initiate a PPP session to a particular remote site, 
it is necessary to 

 1. Dial-out via modem
 2. enter <shft>+
 3. enter hostname
 4. enter key

at which point the far end initiates PPP.

We've been doing this from a workstation with
a locally attached modem.  Is it possible to
establish a PPP session from the digital
modems on our max in the same fashion?

I've looked at the outbound radius profiles
but it seems they all assume an immediate
PPP session on the far end.
