(ASCEND) compaq modems->max 40xx

Running 7.0.1 on max 40xx
Having problems with a user connecting from a newer Compaq machine with a
kflex modem, it's V.90, dunno the brand of modem, user is
very snippy and doesn't want to provide any info.
Call comes in, handshakes for like 50 seconds, disconnects, no lan session
up. User gets something like "server did not respond to a network request"
in a window

I want to update to 7.0.22 but am unsure about the stability/cause of
other problems. Suggestions? Ideas? It's hard to do radif/pppif on it,
because the POP location is across 5 chassies
