the only real reason I could think of would be
if you load an image that doesn't support all of
the features of the previous load, that doing a "nvramclear"
might destroy any config values that this load doesn't understand.
since a "tload" requires IP for TFTP, and/or telnet to get to the box,
I would think that we could do without some of the loads,
(for example why do we need _ANY_ of the modem-specific loads?)
and maybe even just build a single load that would save all
config values regardless, but doesn't support IPX/AppleTalk/FrameRelay/etc.,
and just say something like:
When upgrading from a Pre-6.0 release to a
Post-6.0 Extended load, you must first load image
"restricted.m40" and then upgrade again to your final image.
or
When upgrading/installing software by XMODEM upload,
you should load the "restricted.m40" first,
which once loaded will give you enough functionality
to use TFTP to download the final image.
the only sticky wicket is loading the image over a WAN interface,
which I belive the upgrade docs already mention,
may not nescecarily be enabled in a restricted load.
