(ASCEND) getting a P50 to take a MPP call from a PM3

I have struggled with this thing for two days.

Can anyone help me get my pipe 50 to take a MPP call from my PM3 ?

This is what's happening on the PM3 side:

Starting dial to location    hellsouth using S45
dagobah> S45: Sending Call Request -  3318722
S45: Received Proceeding
S45: Received Connect - B22
S46: Sending Request Connect - 64Kbps / Voice (B23 ID:21e7)
S46: Received Connect - B23
S45: Sending Disconnect Request
S45: Received Clear Conf  (B22 ID:802e)
S45: Session Terminated - Service Unavailable - PPP PAP Auth Failed

So I know it's username/password on the ascend end.  I have the recv auth
set to the same p/w as the pm3 is sending, and it's set to PAP on both
ends.

The P50 dials in fine, but won't receive successfully.
