Re: (ASCEND) System password prompt
In the past all UNIX systems were linked together using SLIP and PPP
over WAN links. This basically created the internet. First there was
SLIP, then PPP. The procedure for getting it to work was:-
1) dial the remote unix system.
2) Remote system answers
3) One receives a normal unix login prompt.
4) One does login/password.
5) One runs the SLIP or PPP process to switch from the unix shell.
Nowadays, we have: -
1) dial the remote system
2) Remote system answers
3) start sending PPP to remote system.
4) Remote system auto senses PPP.
5) Auto sensed PPP session starts.
So as you can see. Only with the advent of auto sensing PPP/Terminal
session is the removal of login/password script stage possible.
Nowadays every NAS has this auto sensing feature but people packaging
UNIX have not bothered to catch up, except maybe the KDE PPP dial in
Linux.
I hope this helps.
