So I suppose you had crossfire<...>.tar.gz,
and decompressed it to crossfire<...>.tar

Ok.
First possiblility:
- gunzip the tar.gz file.
- untar the .tar file (tar xvf <file>)
Second:
- do both steps in one (tar zxvf <...>.tar.gz)

Just read the README or INSTALL file. Should be
described quite clearly in there.
Quickstart:
- ./configure
- make
- make install

Have you installed kde ? If so, try to get and install 'kpppd'
Otherwise try to get this information from your ISP.
