Are both the laptop and the desktop hanging?

How are they networked?

Has anything changed recently in the network configuration?

I've had this happen under 4.2 also, and suspect it's a timing issue
relating to some other process upon which amd depends.  Try checking to
make sure your other network daemons aren't getting hung up or delayed
(a misconfigured DNS server can do this) and turn off all unnecessary
boot processes in run level 2 and 3.
