I'm new to the group but I know a bit about hardware and Raid.
Mirroring is great for system disks, but a stripe set with parity (SSP)is
much faster and very safe if your looking to protect data.  SSP requires at
least 3 hard drives If one fails you replace it and regenerate the data from
the 2 living disks. This is best done with hot swappable drives.  What you
may need is a hardware raid that supports SSP.
I know Sun has disk arrays that will do SSP but that solution is expensive.
Most systems are SCSI because IDE cables can only be 18 inches long (by
spec.)  I hope I gave some light to a topic that can be confusing.
