Re: [TCLUG:2057] Samba file serving

No need for vfat file system on the server. You are share the
file via a network protocol and so the way your server accesses the
files themselves _should_ be irrelevant (and in this case it is). It
would be different if the hard disks were physically shared between
the machines (and it would also be weird and expensive). Samba shares
disk space just fine from anywhere in your ext2 filesystem. I've even
shared root once (yikes - "Security, stop this man before he can try
any more of his stupid tricks!") to see if it would work just fine,
and it does.
	Hope this helps,

Troy

Hi everyone,

I've got a quick Samba question. This may qualify for REQOTD (Really
Easy
Question of the Day).

I've got a partition set aside on my server to serve Win32 apps. I
can see
it on the Win95 machines through the Network Neighborhood. The
question
is, do I need to put a vfat filesystem on that partition before I
try
installing some software on it? I guess it seems like I would. If I
need
to give it some Win-compatible filesystem, can I do that from Windows
over
the network, or do I have to do something like 'mkfs.vfat'? Thanks.
