Kernel question

I think that I am perhaps overlooking something painfully obvious - but  I am
having a bit of an issue compiling the new kernel - I follow all the steps
outlined in the HOWTO, and get to the "make zImage" command, to which I get a
reply saying that that is not defined and that it stopped...

I am running RH 5.2 on an Alphastation 200 - any clues?  Is it something stupid?
Is it a user error?
