The web page you hit is an archive of messages for an open source
internet software project called the Netrek Vanilla Server.  The word
Vanilla had been chosen to indicate that the product is main-stream
rather than an off-shoot.  Vanilla flavoured ice-cream being the
"default" flavour.

Unfortunately, someone who was wanting to market the agricultural
product known as organic vanilla thought that our mailing list was for
them, and so they started talking.

We think they got the idea in the end.

(I've just moved to a country village, but I don't think anybody is
growing vanilla here.)
