Steve Sheldon,

Sorry, we've done that already.  The current metaservers accept UDP
packets from the servers in place of an outgoing TCP connection.  The
.metaservers file on Vanilla 2.7pl6 and greater supports this, so that
the server solicits players by informing the metaservers of their player
counts.
