RE: (ASCEND) Dead Pipeline 50 -- How to reset?
Unfortunately, you have a DEAD p50. You apparently fried the NVRAM. I
know this, b/c I did it on one of my p50s. You can jumper it and load
the software via the serial port, but the p50 is now VERY unreliable.
What happened is that you upgraded from 4.6B+ to 5.x. In the upgrade
notes, there is a huge warning that says when upgrading from 4.x to 5.x,
it is mandatory to upgrade first to 4.6Ci18, then to 5.x -- in order to
avoid frying the NVRAM. Doesn't happen every time, but when it does, it
hurts. :-/

Subject: (ASCEND) Dead Pipeline 50 -- How to reset?
We have an ancient pipeline 50 that lost it's ability to establish
ISDN connections today. The software was 4.6B+ so
naturally I figured it was time to upgrade the software in the box
to see if it would start working agin..it had been giving us random
problems for some time such as rebooting when attempting telnet
connections, etc... ..so it was flashed to 5.1A+ and restarted....only
it didn't come back up....just constantly brings up the power on Self
Test and reboots...over and over.
A call to ascend was placed, they took the model number and serial
number (6118134) then immediately told me that an RMA would be
issued. I get a fax saying sorry, the unit is out of warranty and it
will be $127 to repair it or $236 to replace it.
Now I can understand the need for a warranty, but I get the feeling
that these old style pipelines were pieces of shit to begin with
and the software they shipped on the unit was crap and has never
worked reliably...so I have a little frustration at trying to update the
software (exactly according to directions, done it plenty on our newer
pipelines....it was the software or the hardware that screwed the unit)
and having to pay for ascend's sorry ass engineering mistakes.
Now to the point, any ideas on how to fix this pipe without shelling
out
to ascend agin? Can I just open the unit up and clear some jumpers
or something and reload a software rev through the serial port?
Thanks,
Scott McDonald
