You don't mention what version of software you upgraded from, but 
Ascend changed the way RADIUS works in 7.0.0. You may need to change 
the Vendor-Specific Attribute (VSA) support settings in external-auth 
to stop the errors.

We had exactly the same experience as you, and setting the various 
compat settings to vendor-specific fixed the problem. If you are 
experiencing no other RADIUS problems, you do _not_ need to make your 
timeouts longer.

Vendor-Specific Attribute (VSA) support.
