No one at Ascend has ever said the 4000 was at end-of-life. Here is a post
I made to this list back on 11/13/98 which refers to a post in the summer
of 98. This shouldn't be news to anyone.

As we noted over the summer, we are discontinuing further development for
the Max 4000 and the V.34 modem slot cards.

The Max 4000 moves to maintenance status. Maintenance Status means that
TAOS 7.0 will be the last branch of system software developed for the MAX
4000 product family. The MAX 4000 product family will continue to be fully
supported with Maintenance Releases of TAOS 7.0.X for at least a year after
the general availabilty release in November 1998. This pertains to all
versions of the MAX 4000 including the MAX 4000, 4002, 4004, 4024, 4030,
4048, 4060, etc.

Existing sales and support agreements with customers will be honored. New
customers should be made aware that the MAX 4000 is now in Maintenance
Status and will not inherit new TAOS features after release 7.0.

The V.34 modem cards move to maintenance status. Maintenance Status means
that TAOS 7.0 will be the last branch of system software with support for
V.34 slot cards for the MAX and MAX TNT product families.

Please note that our Series56 and Series56 II Digital Modem modules for the
MAX and MAX TNT still support V.34 CLIENT modems, in addition to other
legacy modem modulations. We are discontinuing software support for
specific CENTRAL SITE hardware, including TNT-SL-DM48, MX-SL-12MOD-V34,
MX-SL-12MOD, among others.

The V.34 slot cards will continue to be supported with Maintenance Releases
of TAOS 7.0.X for at least one year after the general availabilty release
in November 1998. Please see the 7.0 release notes for instructions on the
file required for support of V.34 modem slot cards.

Existing sales and support agreements with customers will be honored. New
MAX customers should be made aware that the V.34 slot cards are now in
Maintenance Status and will not inherit new TAOS features after release
7.0. V.34 slot cards are no longer for sale on the MAX TNT.
