I really know what you mean :-)
There are two major groups that you must know:

1.) How is the medium (copper) physically used:
 a. IDSL (basically the US-BRI interface (called U0)) max speed 128kbps symetric
 b. SDSL symetric line max speed 2.3mbps
 c. ADSL-CAP asymetric line max 7mbps download and 1mbps upload
 d. ADSL-DMT asymetric line littlebit slower than ADSL-CAP but more robust

All physical Connections (EXEPT FOR SDSL) need diffrend Hardware for both Sides
 and are Host/Client in hardware.

2.) How is the transport used ontop of the Physical connection.
 a. "DSL"pipe what means they exchange PPP/FR-Packets directly. (the first generation)
 b. "Cell"pipe means the lowest exchange layer is ATM and PPP/FR may sit ontop of that.
(the second generation (host is the Stinger))

For your Question that means on the ISP-Side you need an IDSL-Hostcard
and a Pipe-UBRI Modell on the Clientside. (but I can't recomment ISDL because
it's simply to slow)
