This is just a guess, but since "initialization of core devices" failed,
and since you can't even fire up the setup program, I'd say your X server
binary got corrupted in the crash -- wouldn't be the first time that's
ever happened. In my own experience, even if your mouse doesn't work yet,
you can at least start up the X setup program and navigate through it with
the keyboard (this is with XFree86, not Xi -- but I bet they're similar in
that respect).

Relink /dev/modem to whatever port your mouse is on, and try again. I have
a feeling it won't work, but it's worth a shot. Reinstall X? :/
