I don't think you do, assuming you are talking about "Termsrv" mode.
The idea behind allowing telnet to the MAX is to get a virtual console,
just like you had connected a terminal to the serial port.

Maybe if you could say why you want to "go straight to terminal mode",
we can help you.

For example: Are you trying to do a "show users"?  If so, you can enable 
the "finger" option in 5.0AiX and 6.0AbX to obtain the same information.
