Re: (ASCEND) MAX 4002 won't link to PRI

Hi Peter,

I had to test couple of P130's recently, in loopback and back to back with no
telco circuit at all before the telco did some more extensive testing and
found a problem at their CO.

Initially I got this from Ascend/Lucent tech support.

For a T1 loopback take an ethernet cable and cut in two, strip the 1,2,4,5 and

twist the 1 and 5 together, and then twist the 2 and 4 together. Plug this in

and you should get the carrier indication and see packets transmitted and
received. Of course the connection will then terminate pretty quicky when the
unit tries to authenticate, but at that point you've been able to see it send
and receive packets which gives basic verification the CSU is functioning.

T1 crossover for back to back configuration - pin 1,2,4,5 on one end - to
5,4,2,1 on
the other (When I say pin 1, it's the first pin on the left side with the tab
on the RJ45 plug
facing down and holding it as though you were about to plug it in.)

Both these worked for me and the fact that the link came up and authenticated
seems to verify the correct wiring configuration.(At least with Ascend gear) I
hooked up a hub and notebook to test login, data transfer etc.

here's a diagram that agrees with the above..

I've also seen the other 1to4 & 2to5 T1 in several places including some that
could not work because closer inspection of the diagram shows RX to RX and TX
to TX. It's amazing the amount of wrong information out there. I have a wiring
chart from Leviton that gets ethernet wrong.

The 1to4 and 2to5 is USOC RJ48C, this is also the specification given in the
Ascend P130 manual for a crossover cable. - Qualified with the statement.
(Model #RJ48C-X) (Part #2510-0059-001) when the WAN transmits on pin 5&4 and
receives on pins 2&1

(Model #RJ48C-S) (Part #2510-0064-001) when the WAN transmits on pins 2&1 and
receives on pins 5&4

below is an example of one I see a lot - notice how the description doesn't
match the drawing.

another that seems strange - straight thru
http://www.icn.state.ia.us/services/techhelp/T1_Cable.htm

one that agrees with 1to4 and 2to5

Any waay - all I know is the first ones above worked - they disagree with
whats in the Ascned manual but it's what I got from Ascend tech support and I
know it works. And it agrees with the Adtran site. I'm beginning to think it
will work either way and will test it out soon.
