Can't you just remove the password as a check item?
I don't think there's a problem with that since many
systems use caller ID and other attributes as check
items in lieu of passwords:

user myuser
     reply attribute 1
     reply attribute 2
     ...

try not placing password = "whatver" in the check
item fields.
