Try setting both the Cisco and the MAX to PPP (plain old PPP, "standards
stuff).

IIRC, Cisco's "HDLC" is Cisco-proprietary - only useful for Cisco-Cisco -
so this result is not surprising.

Sorry, no working config, but it _should_ work with both ends configured
for PPP (that's the _theory_ of standards like PPP ;-).  Of course this
may lead you into the problems of authentication - but if it's really a
leased line you hould be able to safely use no authentication, at least
for initial testing.
