I was watching log files friday night and was able to catch
the pool leak in the act...

When the pool has leaked to empty I got this:
Login: jhoward
Password:

    PPP: No IP Pool assigned.

------

A normal display after a user disconnected, freeing an address:
Login: jhoward
Password:
    Entering PPP Mode.
    IP address is 205.142.31.10
    MTU is 1524.

------

this "remaining allocated" is where my missing addresses went,
the "InUse" number seems to be right:
(the pool shown is a different block than the one that leaked,
I replaced the old block with this one to avoid rebooting)
ascend% sh pool
Pool# Base Count InUse
   1 206.71.7.193 62 36

Number of remaining allocated addresses: 31

------

and finally the cause of the leak, a user who is authorised
to login with only a single channel, single IP, 64k PPP link
bought a new 3COM router for home and was trying to connect at 128k.
his router was configured for NAT, and was dialing us twice to get 128k,
and then when we dropped the second channel his router dropped the first one,
his IP address shows up in both disconnect messages and then goes to limbo
never to be used again. within minutes this user alone had eaten 30 addresses.
